Zambia and DRC Collaborate on Electric Vehicle SEZs to Drive Green Industrialization

In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable industrialization, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have partnered to establish Special Economic Zones (SEZs) dedicated to electric vehicle (EV) production. This initiative, supported by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), aims to position both countries as key players in the global EV supply chain.

The collaboration focuses on developing SEZs that will host facilities for the production of battery precursors, batteries, and electric vehicles. Afreximbank and ECA will lead the establishment of an operating company, bringing together public and private investors to drive this ambitious project.

In October 2023, Chinese firm Better Technology Group announced plans to invest approximately US$100 million in the Chibombo Multi-Facility Economic Zone in Zambia. The investment will fund the establishment of an EV battery manufacturing facility, with equipment procurement underway and construction expected to be completed by March 2024.

This strategic partnership not only aims to boost local economies through job creation and infrastructure development but also aligns with global efforts to transition towards cleaner energy sources. By tapping into their rich mineral resources and leveraging SEZ frameworks, Zambia and the DRC are set to become pivotal in the production of sustainable transportation solutions.
